The Digital Justice Center, based at the University of Wrocław, conducts interdisciplinary research on the impact of new technologies on criminal justice systems. Its research addresses key contemporary challenges, including the use of digital technologies for evidence gathering and surveillance, audiovisual technologies in criminal proceedings, artificial intelligence in criminal justice and predictive policing, as well as the digitalisation of financial and banking law, particularly in the context of financial stability, AML, and CFT.
In Poland, research on the effects of new technologies on criminal justice has so far been limited. The Digital Justice Center aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive research hub and by embedding the University of Wrocław within international networks of research centres engaged in the academic analysis of digital transformation in criminal justice. Through international collaboration and joint research projects, the Center contributes to the global scholarly debate on digital justice.
Karolina Kremens, LL.M., Ph.D. (habilitation in law), is Head of the Digital Justice Center at the University of Wrocław. A qualified lawyer and former Associate Prosecutor, she researches digital technologies, gender perspectives, and comparative criminal procedure, and is the author of Powers of the Prosecutor in Criminal Investigation (Routledge, 2021).
The Digital Justice Center is a partner of the Virtual Criminal Justice Network (VCJN). As part of this collaboration, the Center co-organised the workshop held at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati and is involved in the preparation of an upcoming special issue based on the outcomes of this event.
